Beavers are more than intriguing animals with flat tails and lustrous fur. American Indians called the beaver the "sacred center" of the land because this species creates rich habitats for other mammals, fish, turtles, frogs, birds and ducks. Beavers are hard workers and are considered the engineers of the animal kingdom because of the complex dams and lodges they build. Beavers are known for building dams, canals, and lodges (homes). They are the second-largest rodent in the world (after the capybara ). Beavers are responsible for creating many of the woodland ponds that support lush vegetation and eventually become meadows. Beavers are very territorial, and will not allow other beavers into an area that contains an active colony. Any animals relocated can only be released on private ground with written permission, and in 20 years of beaver trapping I have yet to find a property owner who wants them in their lake or pond. Beavers are thrifty and have special stomachs designed to break down wood. They cannot digest all the cellulose (the fibers that make up most of wood) and they excrete the partially digested vegetation. Beavers are born knowing how to build lodges and dams. They stand on their hind legs and cut down trees, while balancing on their tail. Beavers are built for underwater work.

Beaver Disease Information

Giardiasis, also known as Beaver Fever, is a disease seen in a wide variety of animals, including our domestic dogs and cats, and people too. This disease is caused by a protozoan parasite entering the gastrointestinal tract from an infected water source. Giardiasis is found throughout the world and is a common cause of traveller's diarrhea . In the United States it is a growing problem, especially among children in childcare centers. Giardiasis, was once thought of as a camper's disease. Campers under primitive conditions, such as lack of hygiene or water and contact with Giardia cysts through the droppings of wildlife, were often the ones that contracted the disease.

Giardiasis is an infectious disease that is caused by single-celled parasites (microorganisms) known as protozoa that belong to the Giardia lamblia family. Some individuals with giardiasis will not have any symptoms (asymptomatic).

Mountain beaver burrow systems support a community of vertebrates and other animals. Skunks, salamanders, moles, voles, shrews, chipmunks, ground squirrels, mice, woodrats, gophers, weasels, mink, hares and brush rabbits have all been trapped in mountain beaver burrows. Mountain beavers are abundant and active year-round, yet they are seldom observed due to their subterranean existence. Although active on and off throughout a 24 hour period, they are only occasionally seen wandering around on the ground or climbing in trees during daylight hours.

Furthermore, few radiotelemetry studies exist for beavers because no practical method of attaching a radiotransmitter to beavers was available until recently. We used radiotelemetry, remote videography, and trapping data to quantify survival, dispersal, and natality of unexploited beavers in southern Illinois, USA, during 2004 to 2006. Furs were more valuable to the early European explorers of North America than even gold, and they actively sought out native americans to gather the furs for them. Beaver pelts were one of the most prized furs from the 1600s to the 1800s. Furthermore, we must deal with the condition of identifying with the oppressor. Indians, an oppressed and exploited people, wore white clothing in order partially to share in white power that had given whites guns and other items of status.

Fur colour is also different. Overall, 66% of Eurasian beavers have pale brown or beige fur, 20% have reddish brown, nearly 8% are brown and only 4% have blackish coats.

Giardia may be found in soil, food, water, or surfaces that have been contaminated. To protect yourself, practice good hygiene and avoid drinking or eating anything that may be contaminated. Giardia cysts however, are removed from drinking water during the filtration process of water treatment thus reducing greatly the risk of infection. That said, the evidence linking beavers and giardia applies to the North American beaver and so far, no link has been established with the European beaver. Giardia is an important parasite for a number of reasons. It poses a risk to human health because it can be transmitted to people, causing severe gastrointestinal disease, especially in immunocompromised people, including the elderly, newborns, pregnant women, and cancer and AIDS patients.

Giardia infection is a concern for people camping in the wilderness or swimming in contaminated streams or lakes, especially the artificial lakes formed by beaver dams (hence the popular name for giardiasis, "Beaver Fever").

Damage to tree seedlings also keeps the trees within a size range that is susceptible to damage by hares, rabbits, deer, and elk. If damage is not controlled, large areas may not be adequately reforested. Damage in urban areas is generally minor. However, beaver problems can be severe where beaver girdle or cut down valuable ornamental trees and shrubs or undermine yards, walks and roadways with their burrowing.
