Briarcliff Bats in the Attic Central Texas is home to possibly the largest bat population in North America with the largest concentration being in and around the Austin area. Though many migrate south during the cooler months of winter, we have a significant population that remain in the area during the winter months. Bats can enter a structure through a very tiny hole, slightly larger than ¼ of an inch which makes them very difficult to keep out of a structure. Once they are inside the guano begins to build up causing a serious health risk. Bats are protected and should at all times be treated with care and respect. Not to mention they are at the top of the list as rabies vectors. There is a lot of stigma and negative emotions attached to bats but they do provide a very important service to us and our way of life. They eat biting and disease carrying bugs. If you have bats in your home or business this situation should only be handled by a trained bat exclusion specialist. I recently was called to a government building that had multiple bats enter the second floor office space where the bats had come into direct contact with many of the employees. After arriving and conducting an inspection I had found that the building maintenance personnel had tried to deal with the situation themselves and “sealed up” the structure. The problem was they sealed the bats inside the building. Their plan was to seal the building and “catch” all of the bats with a net. Bad idea! The reason is bats were used to coming and going through one or two main entry/exit points. This is a very large 4 story building. When their main entry/exit points were blocked, the bats became confused then abandoned their normal travel route. With no place to get out, they entered the building by the dozens and many died. This could all have been avoided by hiring a trained wildlife professional. When we conduct a bat inspection, we find where they are getting into the building and use these points to exclude the bats. By exclude them we mean allow them to get out and deny them access back in. That is the correct way to remove bats. We also know when the maternity season is and can take steps to minimize the damage caused by bats without abandoning the pups on the nest. Dear TIm, I very much enjoyed speaking with you on the phone about the animal problem in my ceiling. You not only explained how your company works, but the fact that you close up any potential entry areas and guarantee your work made me feel I had chosen the right company.
Your technician, Russell, politely called ahead to let me know when he would arrive within the time window we had predetermined. Upon arrival, Russell surveyed my raccoon and squirrel problem, then explained to me how he was going to handle it. He was very thorough and maintained phone contact with me to keep apprise of the situation. Additionally, he made several trips back to check the progress and then finish the job.
He also pointed out that my kitchen exhaust had no cover on it, and he took care of that issue as well. Which was very helpful, because I would have felt awful if I had accidentally smoked a nest of baby birds.
