Squirrels are of different types such as ground squirrels, tree squirrels, flying squirrels and fox squirrels. Squirrels are seen in different colors such as gray, white, red and black. Squirrels are members of the rodent family. The eastern gray squirrel is the most common tree squirrel. Squirrels are also notorious for raiding bird feeders and can consume large amounts of corn and other nuts and seeds.
Squirrels are especially nosy in my gardens. They would dig up anything newly planted and bite off the bulbs .daff, tulips, colchicum .as well as anything green that comes through in spring. Squirrels are very loving, funny and smart animals. After watching squirrels for a while, you realize that they love to have fun, sometimes by teasing neighborhood dogs or chasing each other. Squirrels are considered pests in many places because they are destructive to food crops and can carry bubonic plague and west nile virus. They also eat the eggs of nesting birds, and in some cases, the birds as well.
Squirrels are some of the most familiar rodents. They are small to medium-sized animals with relatively long tails. Squirrels are active primarily during the morning and evening, but they go in and out of the house several times each day, as they exit to forage for food and water, and they sometimes return with food to store. If you mount a trap right on their hole, you'll catch them as they come out. Squirrels are in the Sciuridae family, which includes such critters as chipmunks, flying squirrels and prairie dogs. Rats are in the Muridae family, which includes hamsters and gerbils.
Squirrels are fond of sunflower seeds and nuts, but feeding nuts can be expensive, especially when most are buried rather than eaten. Squirrels are excellent climbers and jumpers. They are well known as unwelcome guests at birdfeeders. Squirrels are also attracted to corn and sunflower seeds. Live-trapped squirrels should be released at least two or three miles away to prevent their return.
Squirrels are very aggressive critters and numerous squirrel bites are reported each year. Squirrels have been known to carry rabies. Squirrels are so integrated into human culture that they are almost to the point of transparency. While many humans consider them a nuisance, and try (in vain) to keep the clever Squirrels from their bird food, and other treats, Squirrels have proven an irresistable invasion force. Squirrels are eating my tomatoes. I have them in planters on my patio and as soon as they turn orange, squirrels take them and eat them.
Squirrels are opportunistic, making use of all sources of food and shelter available to them. They can also cause property damage, gnawing through electrical wiring or overturning bird feeders.
Nests are lined with shredded bark, moss, lichens, leaves, and feathers. Flying squirrels tend to occupy cavities with smaller entrance holes, while other cavity-nesters, such as eastern grey squirrels ( Sciurus carolinensis ) and fox squirrels ( S. Nests are hard to see in the Summer, because they are made with green leaves, and are hidden by foliage (leaves on the trees). They are easy to see in the Winter, when the nest leaves have turned brown and tree leaves fall to the ground.
