SIAMESE CAT VS. BATS

I  live in an old farmhouse and have always had bats in the attic. My attitude was “they could have the attic and I would have the rest of the house”. I had no flies, mosquitoes, and very few other flying insects. It worked quite well for a number of years. We lived in harmony, more or less. Unfortunately, word got out and I soon had 4 colonies in the attic. Than a black snake took up residence. Harmony was destroyed and utter chaos took its place. Bats began to slip under the doors, through the keyholes, down the chimney etc.etc.  Princess Nephriti (the Siamese cat) thought that this event was on a par with the invention of Fancy Feast and as playmates, right up there with snakes (that‘s another story). She would sit on the newel post of the stairs, and when one would fly by, she would grab them in mid-air. She would then come to me with bat in mouth and wings flapping. I would grab the leather gloves, take it out of her mouth and pitch it outside. After a few episodes of this, she stopped bringing them to me and would instead play with them, throwing them in the air and jumping up after them. Than I noticed that she wasn’t sleeping much during the day anymore. Found her sitting in front of the woodstove patiently waiting for a bat to come out. They would come down the chimney and slip out through the air vents. After I shut those down, they would slip out where the stove pipes fit together: a bat would slip a wing through, than his body and head and than the other wing. Nephie always waited until they were all the way through before pouncing. She always got her bat. It got to the point where Nephie couldn’t keep up with the traffic and when I came downstairs one morning to find a row of bats hanging from a bookcase I gave up. Called in professional help, my bat removal service responded promptly. We all live in harmony once again, the snake is still in the attic, he got to fat to get out again. At least I hope it’s a he and not a she producing little snakes.

What is rabies and how do people get it?

Rabies is a disease that is caused by the rabies virus. It affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. People get rabies from the bite of an animal infected with the rabies virus (a rabid animal).

Which animals carry rabies?

In the United States, most recent human rabies cases have been caused by rabies virus from bats. Other wild animals, such as raccoons, skunks, foxes and coyotes, may also carry rabies. Rabies is uncommon in domestic animals such as dogs, cats, and ferrets in the United States.

Note: This may not be true in other countries, especially developing countries, where rabies in cats and dogs may be more common. Small rodents (such as squirrels, rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, and chipmunks) and lagomorphs (such as rabbits and hares) are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to cause rabies among humans in the United States.

What should I do if I come in contact with a bat?

If you are bitten by a bat – or if infectious material (such as saliva) from a bat gets into your eyes, nose, mouth, or a wound – wash the affected area thoroughly and get medical advice immediately. Whenever possible, the bat should be captured and sent to a laboratory for rabies testing (see below).

People usually know when they have been bitten by a bat. However, because bats have very small teeth the bite may not be felt and may leave marks that are not easily seen. Therefore, there are situations in which you should seek medical advice even in the absence of an obvious bite wound:

Note: All bat exposures in Chicago should be reported to the Chicago Department of Public Health. Call 311 (312-744-5000 if calling from a non-Chicago area code) to make this report. If outside Chicago, report to your local health department.

What should I do if I find a bat in my home?

How can I tell if a bat has rabies?

Rabies can be confirmed only in a laboratory. However, any bat that is active by day, is found in a place where bats are not usually seen (for example, in a room in your home or on the lawn), or is unable to fly, is far more likely than others to be rabid. Such bats are often the most easily approached. Therefore, it is best never to handle any bat.

When should I seek medical attention following a bat exposure?

Medical assistance should be obtained as soon as possible after a bat exposure. If your physician is not available, you should be seen in an emergency department. If additional advice is required following a bat exposure, you or your doctor may call the Communicable Disease Physician on call for the Chicago Department of Public Health by dialing 311 (312-744-5000 if outside of city area codes).

What should I do if I have been exposed to a bat and the bat is not available for testing?

Depending on the nature of the exposure, you may need to receive prophylactic (preventive) treatment for rabies regardless of whether the bat is available for testing. This decision should be made by your physician or a representative from the Department of Public Health.

What should I do if I am bitten by a neighborhood cat or dog? Or a wild animal such as a raccoon or skunk?

You should seek medical evaluation for any animal bite. However, rabies is extremely uncommon in dogs or cats in Chicago. If located outside of Chicago, you should seek the advice of the local health authorities. Bites from a wild animal such as a raccoon, skunk or fox have a higher risk of transmitting rabies. If such a bite occurs, the animal should be tested for rabies if possible. If the animal is not available for testing, a health department representative should be contacted for advice about the need for rabies prophylaxis.

What treatment is available for rabies?

There is no effective treatment for rabies once symptoms have started. However, rabies infection can be very effectively prevented by a combination of rabies vaccine and a product called Rabies Immune Globulin (RIG) which provides protection against rabies while the vaccine is taking effect.

In the United States, postexposure prophylaxis consists of a regimen of one dose of immune globulin and five doses of rabies vaccine over a 28-day period. The RIG and the first dose of rabies vaccine should be given by your health care provider as soon as possible after exposure. Additional doses of rabies vaccine should be given on days 3, 7, 14, and 28 after the first vaccination. Current vaccines are relatively painless and are given in your arm, like a flu or tetanus vaccine.

Will the rabies vaccine make me sick?

Adverse reactions to rabies vaccine and immune globulin are not common. Newer vaccines in use today cause fewer adverse reactions than previously available vaccines. Mild, local reactions to the rabies vaccine, such as pain, redness, swelling, or itching at the injection site, have been reported. Rarely, symptoms such as headache, nausea, abdominal pain, muscle aches, and dizziness have been reported. Local pain and low-grade fever may follow injection of rabies immune globulin.

What should I do if my pet is exposed to a bat or bitten by a wild animal?

If you think your pet or domestic animal has been bitten by a bat or other wild animal, contact a veterinarian or Animal Control for assistance immediately and have the bat or animal tested for rabies if possible. Remember to keep vaccinations current for cats, dogs, and other animals.

Should I be concerned about rabies when I travel outside the United States?

Yes. Rabies and the rabies-like viruses can occur in animals anywhere in the world. In most countries, the risk of rabies in an encounter with an animal and the precautions necessary to prevent rabies are the same as they are in the United States. When traveling, it is always prudent to avoid approaching any wild or domestic animal.

The developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America have additional problems in that dog rabies is common there and preventive treatment for human rabies may be difficult to obtain. The importance of rabid dogs in these countries, where tens of thousands of people die of the disease each year, cannot be overstated. Before traveling abroad, consult a health care provider, travel clinic, or health department about your risk of exposure to rabies and how to handle an exposure should it arise.

Should I receive rabies pre-exposure vaccination before traveling to other countries?

If you are traveling to a rabies-endemic country, you should consult your health care provider about the possibility of receiving pre-exposure vaccination against rabies. Pre-exposure vaccination is suggested if:

  1. Your planned activity will bring you into contact with wild or domestic animals (for example, biologists, veterinarians, or agriculture specialists working with animals).
  2. You will be visiting remote areas where medical care is difficult to obtain or may be delayed (for example, hiking through remote villages where dogs are common).
  3. Your stay is longer than 1 month in an area where dog rabies is common (the longer you stay, the greater the chance of an encounter with an animal).
