On Monday my dogs were barking and barking and then I heard the strangest bird call I won't even try to repeat it. I did an imitation for my husband and his response was " Can you please do that again". The protected habitat allows alligators, endangered bird species, white-tailed deer, bobcats and the endangered Florida panther to thrive. The park also provides fisherman with plenty of chances to snag tarpon, snook and redfish. They're about 3&1/2 ft tall, bright pink birds, with the "platypus-type" spoonbill. Tons of fish too. The beach has picnic tables for your enjoyment, nature trails, showers, lifeguards, and a observation tower! Benches and rain shelters are along the trail. For those who do not wish to walk the full 2.25 miles, an optional trail shortens the walk to one mile. Black Island has over five miles of multi-use trails for hiking and bicycling.
