Raccoon diseases and parasites associated with raccoons
All material on this page came from the Center for Disease Control
Baylisascaris, an intestinal raccoon roundworm, can infect a variety of other animals, including humans. The worms develop to maturity in the raccoon intestine, where they produce millions of eggs that are passed in the feces. Released eggs take 2-4 weeks to become infective to other animals and humans. The eggs are resistant to most environmental conditions and with adequate moisture, can survive for years.
People become infected when they accidentally ingest infective eggs in soil, water, or on objects that have been contaminated with raccoon feces.
When humans ingest these eggs, they hatch into larvae in the person's intestine and travel throughout the body, affecting the organs and muscles.
Anyone who is exposed to environments where raccoons live is potentially at risk. Young children or developmentally disabled persons are at highest risk for infection when they spend time outdoors and may put contaminated fingers, soil, or objects into their mouths. Hunters, trappers, taxidermists, and wildlife handlers may also be at increased risk if they have contact with raccoons or raccoon habitats.
Fairly common. Infected raccoons have been found throughout the United States, mainly in the Midwest, Northeast, middle Atlantic, and West coast. Infection rarely causes symptoms in raccoons. Predator animals, including dogs, may also become infected by eating a smaller animal that has been infected with Baylisascaris.
Raccoons become infected in one of two ways:
Infection is rarely diagnosed. Fever than 25 cases have been diagnosed and reported in the United States as of 2003. However, it is believed that cases are mistakenly diagnosed as other infections or go undiagnosed. Cases have been reported in Oregon, California, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, New York, and Pennsylvania. Five of the infected persons died.
Symptoms of infection depend on how many eggs are ingested and where in the body the larvae migrate (travel to). Once inside the body, eggs hatch into larvae and cause disease when they travel through the liver, brain, spinal cord, or other organs. Ingesting a few eggs may cause few or no symptoms, while ingesting large numbers of eggs may lead to serious symptoms. Symptoms of infection may take a week or so to develop.
Symptoms include
Other animals (except raccoons) infected with Baylisascaris can develop similar symptoms, or may die as a result of infection.
If you suspect you have been infected, consult your health care provider immediately. Be sure to report that you have recently been exposed to raccoons or their feces.
Infection is difficult to diagnose and often is made by ruling out other infections that cause similar symptoms. Information on diagnosis and testing can be obtained through DPDx or your local health department.
You should clean up very carefully. To eliminate eggs, feces and material contaminated with raccoon feces should be removed and burned, buried, or sent to a landfill. Care should be taken to avoid contaminating hands and clothes. The use of gloves and facemask will help prevent cross contamination. Treat feces-soiled decks, patios, and other surfaces with boiling water. Always wash hands well with soap and running water, to help further reduce possible infection.
Early treatment might reduce serious damage caused by the infection. Should you suspect you may have ingested raccoon feces, seek immediate medical attention.

Raccoons are found in most major cities of the continental United States. In New York City, raccoons inhabit city parks, sometimes venturing at night out of the greenery and into the streets to forage for garbage. Raccoons are found statewide in Florida in ever-increasing numbers. Urbanization and agriculture often help their population because food often becomes more available in these conditions. Raccoons are found throughout the United States, as far north as central Canada, and as far south as Panama. Their overall brownish coloration; stubby, black banded tails; and the black mask-like marking around their eyes make them pretty much impossible to forget once seen. Raccoons are nocturnal, needing a quiet and dark place during the daytime. They den in tree cavities, underground burrows made by other animals, and human-made structures such as chimneys, basements, attics, spaces under patios and between walls. Raccoons are attracted to pet foods and can often congregate in large numbers to take advantage of this easily obtained food source. Other raccoon / human conflicts occur when raccoons den in buildings, raid gardens, harass backyard chicken coops or visit garbage cans in search of food. Raccoons are considered high to moderate risk vectors of rabies. There is currently an outbreak of raccoon rabies in the northeast United States. Raccoons are capable of traveling great distances to find food and territory. If you stop feeding, raccoon populations will slowly adjust to the level that can be accommodated by the available natural habitat. Raccoons are protected by law. No one may possess a raccoon without a license, and licenses are not issued for pet wildlife. Raccoons are relatively easy to catch in traps, but it takes a sturdy trap to hold one. Foothold traps may be used on rural sites but should never be used in an urban area. Raccoons are difficult to trap- it is hard to find a bait that will entice them into a box when they could be raiding a garden. Traps placed with their open ends against a raccoon-proof fence at a 45 degree angle to the fence often trap raccoons that are being persistent in trying to find a way under, over or through a fence. Raccoons are intelligent animals whose routines are dictated by their needs. If they cannot get a meal at one place, they will look elsewhere, and they will remember where they can and cannot expect to have their hunger satisfied. Raccoons are excellent climbers and have very dexterous fore paws. They are primarily nocturnal creatures but occasionally venture out in the daytime particularly toward evening. Raccoons are promiscuous breeders and mate with several individuals. Gestation is approximately 63 days. Raccoons are very strong and crafty and have a way of breaking out of traps. Novices just get so many things wrong. Raccoons are awfully cute at a distance, and vicious close up. Imagine trying to get an enormous, angry, feral cat out of your house--that's almost how scary a raccoon would be. Raccoons are easily identified by (1) a distinctive pattern of alternating black and yellowish white rings around a large, bushy tail and (2) a unique narrow black face mask with two white patches above the eyes. They average 2 to 3 feet long (including the tail) and 12 inches high, weigh 8 to 22 pounds (heaviest in autumn), and live for 10 to 13 years. Raccoons are also serious predators of wild bird populations. Reports indicate that raccoons have been responsible for eliminating local populations of some nesting waterfowl. Raccoons are usually nocturnal (night animals), but in warm states, like Florida, they often come out during the day. They choose several trees inside their home range that they like to sleep in, and use different trees on different nights. Raccoons are born with their eyes and ears closed, covered in dark fur with no rings on the tail. The mother alone cares for the young. Raccoons are most fond of agricultural land and river bottoms and urban areas. Prairies, woodlands, and residential areas are also favored habitats. Raccoons are about three feet long, including their bushy, ringed tail. They?re often 10 to 30 pounds, but have been seen as large as 60 pounds. Raccoons are mostly active at night, although they may be seen at dawn or dusk and sometimes even in the middle of the day. In northern climates the winter months are spent in the den, but they do not hibernate. Raccoons are naturally attracted to water. Don't leave a kiddy pool out with water or they will get in it. Raccoons are enticed by the food smells in dumpsters. When the lids are open they climb in and can’t climb the slippery sides to get out. Raccoons are known carriers of rabies, canine distemper, encephalitis, histoplasmosis, trypanosomiasis, coccidiosis, toxoplasmosis, tularemia, tuberculosis, listeriosis, leptospirosis, roundworms, and mange. They are also infested with fleas, ticks, lice and mites which are known transmitters of disease. Raccoons are responsible for more of these complaints than any other species because they readily den in people's attics and chimneys. People with special licenses are allowed to remove raccoons and other wildlife that are causing damage. Raccoons are very adaptive creatures and as a result they live in urban centres all over North America. They do remarkably well in cities as well as in the wild. Raccoons are not supposed to be friendly, but these two practically posed for my camera. I'm seeing them everywhere, even in my own backyard. Raccoons are wild animals. Discourage raccoons from living in and around your home or parks by removing access to food . Raccoons are native to the United States, and they have adapted so well to human habitation that they have expanded their range by a quarter and multiplied their population 15 to 20 times in the past century. Their diet includes rodents, snails, insects, eggs, nestling birds, fish, plant matter, garbage and pet food. Raccoons are some of the smartest mammals found in North America. They are endearing creatures and can seem very innocent as they and their family shuffle across the road. Raccoons are clever and agile, they can open trash cans and other containers. Use metal trash cans, always use the lid and weight the lid with something heavy, like a brick. Raccoons are nocturnal, meaning that they are normally awake at night, though they can be somewhat reprogrammed. Raccoons do catch some of the same parasites of cats and dogs, so small cubs can have worms, i.e., Baylisascaris procyonis (raccoon roundworms). Raccoons are quick runners, but they are not always fast enough to flee from large enemies. But with their sharp claws, raccoons are good tree climbers. Raccoons are opportunists, commonly eating whatever is available. Important foods include crayfish, mussels, clams, frogs, salamanders, earthworms, fruits, nuts, grains, carrion, eggs, and any available warm blooded small mammals or birds. Raccoons are creatures of habit. Raccoons are omnivores, which means they will eat most anything. They are also a very curious animal with an endless appetite. Raccoons are rarely active in the daytime, and do not hibernate but may sleep for long periods. Raccoons are primarily solitary animals. Raccoons are classified as furbearers in Indiana. Under state law, landowners or their tenants may take furbearing animals at any time if they are causing damage. Raccoons are in that small cadre of mammals that human beings haven't managed to scare off from living near us. Rabbits, squirrels and a few other animals have found we're not all bad as neighbors go, though like the raccoon I saw, they prefer to coexist rather than interact with us. Raccoons are familiar animals with masked faces and ringed tails. They have five toes on both the front and hind feet. Raccoons are more intelligent than cats and can be easily trained. But after they reach the age of about 1 year, they may be easily angered and, as a result, often bite and scratch. Raccoons are very interesting animals to watch because many of their motions remind us of things we do. Raccoons walk flat footed like humans, and their front paws work a lot like human hands. Raccoons are true omnivores; they will eat just about anything. Raccoons can live in the woods, urban and city environments, raccoons will adapt easily. Raccoons are primarily inhabitants of broadleaf woodlands, although they are rather common in the mixed-pine forests of southeastern Texas. They seldom occur far from water, which seems to have more influence on their distribution than does any particular type of vegetation. Raccoons are particularly fond of sweet corn and know when it is ripe. Broken stalks and/or open husks indicate raccoon damage. Raccoons are omnivorous feeding on fruits, plant material, eggs, crustaceans, small animals, and garbage. Raccoons usually become active in the late afternoon and throughout the night. Raccoons are nocturnal, so you won’t see or hear much from them during the day. A raccoon in your home may make thumping noises as it heads out for dinner at about 10 p.m. Raccoons are also beneficial to humans because of their consumption of pesky insects and mice, their aesthetic qualities, and their fur. They are an enjoyable and lovable animal; however, they can cause damage and pose health problems to animals and humans. Raccoons are able to live in a wide range of habitats. The only apparent requirements are a source of water, food, and a protected area for denning. Raccoons are heavy, so secure it well. Raccoons are easily identified by their narrow mask-like faces with white patches above their eyes, and their bushy tails with alternating black and yellowish rings. They are about one metre long including the tail, and weigh from 7-22 kg. Raccoons are destructive but if they learn from early time on they will learn to leave your stuff alone. Raccoons are excellent climbers and are very dextrous. A raccoon's fingers are almost as nimble as a monkey's and they aid this creature in opening trash cans and boxes, and in disassembling building structures in order to find habitat. Raccoons are winning by way of being viscious little buggers. We had a possum living under our deck for a while. Raccoons are nocturnal, lions are nocturnal, and bats are nocturnal. Humans are not nocturnal. Raccoons are my specialty, rescuing, raising, healing and evicting. I also have a colony of deck coons - pics in the photo album. Raccoons are omnivores and feed up on plant foods and vertebrates. Their diet in spring and early summer consists mostly of insects, worms and other animals already available early in the year, raccoons prefer fruits and nuts that emerge in late summer and autumn for their rich calorie content in order to build up fat storage for winter. Raccoons are medium sized mammals with adults ranging in weight from about 8 to 20 pounds and a length of 28 to 33 inches. Male raccoons are generally larger than the females. Raccoons are found statewide. Solitary creatures, males occupy a home territory of about 1 square mile, while females and their young occupy about 3/4 square mile. Raccoons are opportunistic and have adapted to eat trash and other food available in suburban and urban areas. Dens in tree cavities and hollow logs, rock crevices, burrows, brush piles, haystacks, beaver lodges, chimneys, attics, crawl spaces, barns, buildings, culverts, storm sewers, and abandoned autos. Usually has a central den (and a few spares) within its range. Dens or other heavily utilized raccoon areas may be infested with the eggs of raccoon roundworm. This parasite can cause severe health problems in humans who accidentally ingest the eggs found in raccoon feces. Dens are usually in hollow trees and logs. Raccoons have lots of different trees where they like to sleep and they go to a different one every night. Rabies isn’t the only problem. Raccoons can also spread roundworms through their feces. Rabies is a serious viral disease that results in death if untreated. Infected animals may be agitated and aggressive, or fearless and lethargic; normally nocturnal animals who are diseased may roam about fearlessly in daytime. Rabid raccoons have increasingly become a problem in northern Manhattan, prompting city officials to take action this month, distributing warning flyers throughout the neighborhood and increasing surveillance of local parks. Michael Congo, a public information specialist at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, said in an e-mail in early January to numerous local residents and community groups. Rabies is a disease caused by a virus and it is almost always fatal. It is spread through a bite by an infected animal. Rabies virus causes an inflammation of the brain, and is almost always fatal once symptoms develop. In wild and domestic animals, rabies virus may affect the part of the brain which regulates aggression, causing the animal to attack without fear or provocation. Traps should be at least 10 x 12 x 32 inches (25.4 x 30.5 x 81.3 cm) and well-constructed with heavy materials. They can be baited with canned fish-flavored cat food, sardines, fish, or chicken. Trapping and moving the family is not recommended because it will almost inevitably separate the mother from her young. When you’re certain that the young raccoons have left the nest, frightening devices, like a portable radio and a mechanic’s light, can be used to evict the animals. Trappers earned money selling raccoon fur, called pelts. Today, people continue making money by trapping raccoons with traps, or they may hunt them using hound dogs. Traps can be baited with canned cat food (especially fish-flavored), sardines, fish, or chicken. Check the trap frequently (at least twice each day) to prevent undue stress to the captured animal. Trapping may also leave starving young behind to die, causing a bigger problem. Current Ministry of Natural Resources guidelines state that using body gripping traps or placing poison could result in criminal charges and/or provincial charges with fines up $5,000. Cubs are weaned at approximately 70 days and are independent of their mother after 20 weeks. They become more independent by late fall, but continue to den with the family group, especially during the severe winter months. Cubs spend a long time with the mother in the family unit, and adult males seem to spend a lot of time together, too. This is a very unique social behavior.?
