The raccoon is a warm blooded mammal that is as big as a medium size dog. The adult raccoons weigh from about 10-30 pounds. The total body length, including the tail measures from 26 to 40 inches. The raccoon is also known as the "masked bandit" beacuse of their unique facial coloring, the raccoon is also called a bandit because of his thiervy. Raccoons are a noncturnal animal. The paws of a raccoon can manuver and open almost anything offered. They have been known to be able to open garbage can lids, garage doors, and windows. They can be found living in caves, rocks, hollowed out trees, and in your attic!
The gestation period for raccoons is about 63 days with a litter averaging four to six young being born in April or May. About 60% of the female raccoons breed and produce litters when they are one year old while males typically do not breed until their second year. Mating season for the raccooon is at its peak in February and March. When about two months old, the young begin accompaying the mother as she hunts for food. Young raccoons remain with their mother throughout the year. Raccoons are typically active from about sunset to sunrise. Researches indicate that the average life span is about three to four years.
The intellegence of a raccoon is such that it can pick an avocado from a tree, aim, and throw it at a barking dog. They can also turn door knobs, without a lock. When they climb down a tree, he backs down, except for the last few steps, when it turns around. Swimming comes easily to the raccoon, who uses water for hunting;and, they have been known to drown dogs, who have pursued them into the water. Never approach a wild raccoon, when threatened, they can defend themselves against much larger animals. Sharp teeth, sharp claws, agility, and strength, all make the raccoon the survivor that he is. Though as many as four million are trapped or hunted each year in the United States, the raccoon population seems to be increasing.
People should not handle raccoons or their waste without protection and appropriate training. Raccoons in the United States are known to carry infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans and animals that have contact with raccoons or their waste. Raccoons expose humans to disease when handled or if there is exposure to bodily secretions or feces. Salvia, urine, feces and bites or scratched are the most commom routes of exposure. 80% of all North American raccoons carry Roundworm. This disease is caused by a parasite. The roundworm larvae cause problems as they travel through the person's muscles and various organs, including the liver, brain, lungs, and eyes. Raccoons are the primary host of this roundworm whicn is commonly found in their small intestines. Raccoons shed millions of the microscopic roundwrom eggs in their feces. People may encounter the eggs through direct contact with raccoon droppings or by touching a contaminated area or object. If they don't wash their hands, they may later transfer the eggs to their mouths, Small children are particulary vulnerable because they tend to put their hands, and other objects into their mouths. Symptoms in people may include nausea, skin irrations, tiredness, liver enlargement, loss of coordination and muscle control, blindness, and coma. Other common diseases found in racoons are: Giardiasis, Leptospirosis, Salmomella, E Coli, and Rabies. Raccoons are one of the most common species to carry rabies.

For more than a century — in Connecticut, more than two centuries — gray wolves have been absent from the New England landscape.
Now, wolf by wolf, that may be changing.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service announced it had officially identified a large, dog-like animal
killed in western Massachusetts last fall as a wild gray wolf. It’s the
first time in 160 years a wild wolf has roamed that state.
It’s unclear where the wolf came from — the best guess is that it made its way south from established wolf populations in Ontario or Quebec.
“There are a lot of questions we don’t have answers for,” Thomas Healy, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s special agent in charge, said Wednesday.
Dale May, director of the wildlife division of the state Department of Environmental Protection, said young wolves seeking to establish their own territory can travel “100, 200 or 300 miles.” If a wolf were able to move from Canada to Massachusetts, May said, there’s reason to think one might eventually wander even farther south into the forests of northernConnecticut.
“This was unexpected,” May said of the Masachusetts finding. “But wolves have been known to roam.”
A single gray wolf won’t mean a pack will ever set up residence in Connecticut. May said wolves need 50 to 100 square miles of wild country to operate successfully.
“That means low human population and a low road density,” he said. “There aren’t many places like that in Connecticut.”
I don’t think we have to worry about wolves in Danbury or Westchester County,” said Maggie Howell, operations manager with the Wolf Conservation Center in South Salem, N.Y. “There are too many people. Wolves know people are dangerous.”At the same time, Howell said, the entire Northeast has been “screaming” for a predator like the gray wolf to control the overabundance of white-tailed deer.
Such a predator “could have a huge impact on the ecosystem, down to the level of things like insects,” she said.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service recovered the Massachusetts wolf in October after a farmer in the town of Shelburne killed it. The wolf had previously mauled and killed some lambs on his property.
At that time, Healy said, the service wasn’t sure exactly what it had.
“Did we know we had a big one?” he said. “Yes.”
The service identified the animal as a gray wolf only after DNA testing showed it was not a dog, a coyote or a dog-wolf hybrid. Instead, the service said, the DNA was consistent with gray wolves.
Healy said this is the third gray wolf identified in recent years in the Northeast — the others were in Maine and northern New York. But he said it’s very possible these three weren’t loners and that other wolves are drifting down into the region from Canada.
“That’s what a lot of people have said,” Healy said. “You don’t know what else is out there.”
Howell said both Maine and the Adirondacks have long been considered prime wolf territory, and there have been anecdotal sightings of wolves in the region in the past.
“This has been the most definitive discovery,” Howell said. “This is pretty exciting.”
What has surprised wildlife experts is that to get from the Canadian border to Massachusetts, a wolf would need to cross the St. Lawrence River as well as land, staying largely undiscovered.
“He did a lot of traveling without being noticed,” Howell said.
Healy said the area around Shelburne in western Massachusetts is heavily wooded. A wolf that crossed the St. Lawrence could wander through Vermont into Massachusetts without crossing the paths of many humans.
May said if wolves do establish themselves in Maine or New York, it would be more likely one could wander from there to Connecticut.
May said wildlife biologists are learning many animals in the Northeast — while still wary of humans — have learned they can coexist with them.
“We’re finding a lot of these animals are far more adaptable than we think they are.”
Weston Coyote Removal & Weston Coyote Trapping
Often called Americas finest city, Weston has its share of hazards to watch out for. An out of control
coyote population is one of them. I hear the heart breaking stories
too often. On almost a daily basis callers explain that they lost a cat
or dog to a pack of coyotes, as I have as well. Personaly, I don’t
agree with many animal advocates who want people to ignore the problem
as if the coyotes own the land, and public safety comes secondary. Nor
do I have problem with a coyote being a coyote, away from people. Its
the packs in town I have a problem with.
US Animal Control is an animal damage control company committed to
helping the public in urban settings. The first step is educating the
public. Then maybe you can see the changes needed on your property to
make the area less suitable for coyotes. If the problem is something you
dont care to deal with, feel free to call 888-229-2036 to make an
appointment with a trained wild life professional
A few years ago Weston was having some real issues with urban
coyotes. Cats and dogs were missing or mauled, as well as several
people being bitten as well. I personally took the job, and within 30
days I captured and removed 153 coyotes. One pack had 22 members,
meaning strength in numbers, they could kill and eat
pretty much anything they wanted to, and they did. That was a worse
case project that was left out of control for too long. Furthermore, an
elderly man on the block had a soft spot for them and he was feeding
them in his back yard. Carrying capacity of the land was made stronger
by him, so they made more little coyotes.
Back before the area had so many communities, Weston really didn’t
have much to offer a coyote. So they numbered fewer. But now with
irrigation, sod, fruit trees, bird feeders, and pet food bowls, a
coyote can get a good meal without traveling far. Let me explain how it works. The coyote will eat grain left out for
birds in he has to… but the rats and squirrels are of more interest to
him. And the bird feeder made the rats and squirrels take interest. Now,
why do coyotes kill dogs? The coyote is territorial and is trying to
eliminate competition. Also, they want to be sure the young are safe
from others who may harm them. Carrying a cane or stick while walking a dog can stop a coyote attack.
The attack will be started and done in seconds, so be decisive, and
aggressive! It doesn’t take much more than a hard TAP on a coyotes snout
to make him lay down, this will give you 30-40 seconds to find out how
fast you can run before he wakes up. Many a dog walker in Weston has
come home wishing he had a coyote stick with him. A 6 foot fence can be jumped by a coyote, or he can dig under, so burry the bottom and go 7 ft. No pet food left out over night. Pick up fallen fruit every evening with out fail. If you have cats claws removed, keep it in the house. It can’t defend itself or climb to safety. Be sure the under side of your deck or home is completely closed off. Remember, you control coyote movement by controlling food supply. And having rats and skunks living under there is an invite. Encourage others to do the same! It must be concerted effort to keep the neighborhood safe. If the following tips don’t resolve your issue, and it is too far
out of control for you to deal with, feel free to call 888-229-2036 to
have a professional coyote trapper humanely remove the animals.
Re-locating coyotes is not effective, so company policy strictly
enforces that ALL coyotes captured are humanely euthanised.
